What is Sheet Cutting?
Sheet cutting precisely slices flat stock material along a path to create custom shapes using CNC lasers or waterjets. Part thickness is determined by the material's gauge. Sheet cutting produces custom designs in various quantities and materials, including plastics, elastomers, composites, and metals. It is also used to prepare blanks for sheet metal fabrication and metal stamping. Sheet cutting's precision and adaptability make it essential for efficiently producing parts with tight tolerances, intricate geometries, and diverse properties in modern manufacturing.
Types of Sheet Cutting
-
Shearing : Shearing is a process where the metal sheet is cut by applying a shear force along a straight line. This is typically done using a shearing machine with a fixed blade and a movable blade. Shearing is suitable for straight-line cuts and is commonly used for trimming and slitting operations.
-
Punching: Punching involves using a punch press to create holes or cut out shapes from the metal sheet. A punch (tool) is forced through the sheet, shearing the metal and creating the desired opening or shape. Punching is often used for creating holes, slots, or simple shapes in metal sheets.
-
Laser cutting: Laser cutting is a non-contact process that uses a high-powered laser beam to melt and vaporize the metal along the desired cut path. It is capable of producing intricate and precise shapes with excellent edge quality. Laser cutting is suitable for a wide range of materials and thicknesses.
-
Plasma cutting: In plasma cutting, a high-temperature plasma arc is used to melt and remove material from the metal sheet. The plasma arc is constricted and accelerated through a small orifice, allowing for precise and fast cutting. Plasma cutting is suitable for thicker materials and can produce intricate shapes.
-
Waterjet cutting: Water jet cutting uses a high-pressure stream of water, sometimes mixed with an abrasive material, to cut through the metal sheet. The water jet is capable of cutting complex shapes and a wide range of materials, including hard and thick metals.
-
Stamping: Stamping is a process where a pre-shaped die is used to cut the metal sheet into the desired shape by applying significant force. This method is commonly used for mass production of simple shapes and components.

UTM is an extremely professional company with great customer service. Everything we ordered arrived as expected. There were some initial problems, but Kobe helped find a solution that worked for both sides. We will definitely use them again.
UrbanFor my last order, the customer support was amazing. Kobe helped me solve a logistics issue and the algo parts were excellent quality as expected. I'm super happy with the support and service. For my next order, I'll be increasing the number of parts since I know the quality and service will be great.
Andres CI ordered 50 CNC machined stainless steel parts and they turned out great. The dimensions were right on and the parts were clean and smooth. I'll definitely order from them again.
Wim Peter
They do what they say they'll do. Sometimes they even finish sooner than promised. If we have any problems or questions, they always give us helpful answers. You can count on them.
