Overview: What is CNC Milling?

CNC mills are automated cutting machines that use a rotating spindle to remove unwanted material from a workpiece. These machines come in various sizes and axis configurations, capable of machining materials ranging from plastics and aluminum to steels and titanium.

How CNC Milling Works

CNC mills are computer-controlled machines that excel at cutting complex geometries and profiles on harder materials like metals, alloys, and composites. They operate based on G-Code programs generated by CAM software, which instruct the machine on tool movements, speeds, feed rates, coolant delivery, and positioning of both the cutting tool and workpiece along multiple axes (3-axis, 4-axis, or 5-axis configurations).
In the milling process, specialized cutting tools like face mills, end mills, and ball-nose cutters are used for various operations such as facing, pocketing, slotting, and profiling. Both the cutting tool and workpiece can move simultaneously, enabling efficient material removal and precise contouring. While CNC mills can machine softer materials, they are primarily used in industrial manufacturing sectors like aerospace, automotive, and mold-making, where robust machining of harder workpieces is required. Advanced techniques like high-speed machining and trochoidal milling are often employed to optimize cycle times and surface finishes.

Types of CNC Mills

Metalworking CNC milling machine.

3 Axis CNC

The most widely used type of CNC milling machine. The full use of the X, Y, and Z directions makes a 3 Axis CNC mill useful for a wide variety of work.

4 Axis CNC

This type of router allows the machine to rotate on a vertical axis, moving the workpiece to introduce more continuous machining.

5 Axis CNC

5-axis CNC mills have three linear axes (X, Y, Z) and two rotary axes, allowing machining of five sides of a workpiece in one setup without refixturing. Both the workpiece and cutting spindle can rotate, enabling access to complex geometries, but at a higher cost.

Other Benefits Of CNC Milling

CNC milling machines are engineered for precise manufacturing and exceptional repeatability, making them well-suited for rapid prototyping and production runs ranging from low to high volumes. These versatile machines can process a wide array of materials, from common ones like aluminum and plastics to more exotic materials such as titanium, rendering them an ideal choice for a diverse range of machining applications. To better understand the appropriate use cases, it's beneficial to explore the distinction between a mill and a lathe, as well as scenarios where milling is the preferred machining process.
