Black Oxide Surface Finish Specifications
| Applicable Materials | Visual Appearance | Industrial Applications | Thickness |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steel, Stainless Steel, Copper, Copper Alloys, Brass, Cast Iron | Uniform, matte black finish on metal surface (glossy finish available with oil sealing) | Firearms, Fixturing, Gears, Molds, Pins, Tooling components | 0-30μm / 0-1181μin |
Black Oxide Finish Service Overview
Black oxide coating is a precision chemical conversion process for ferrous materials, stainless steel, zinc, copper, and copper-based alloys that produces a uniform matte black appearance with virtually no dimensional change.
Our black oxide services use a carefully controlled coating process to deliver high-quality finishes for defense, aerospace, firearms, and precision manufacturing applications. Unlike paint or plating that adds thickness, black oxide becomes an integral part of the metal surface.
Black Oxide Finish Advantages
Advantages of Black Oxide Coating
High Aesthetic Appeal
Uniform, professional matte black finish enhances product appearance and brand perception.
Minimize Light Reflection
Reduces glare for optical equipment, firearms, and precision instruments where light reflection causes operator fatigue.
Dimensional Stability
Suitable for parts with tight tolerances (±0.0001") without affecting fit, form, or function.
Prevents Adhesive Wear
Anti-galling properties reduce friction between parts that slide on contact, extending service life.
Improved Corrosion Resistance
When properly sealed with oil, wax, or lacquer, provides moderate to excellent corrosion protection.
No Chipping or Peeling
Coating becomes part of the base metal and will not flake off like paint or powder coating.
Cost-Effective Finishing
Lower processing costs compared to electroplating or anodizing while delivering professional appearance.
High Temperature Resistance
Stable up to 900°F (482°C) before discoloration, suitable for high-heat applications.
No Hydrogen Embrittlement
Safe for high-strength steels and mission-critical fasteners where structural integrity is paramount.
Important Considerations
Corrosion Protection Requirements
Black oxide alone provides minimal corrosion resistance. Parts must be sealed with oil, wax, or lacquer to prevent flash rusting, especially in humid environments.
Material Hardness Limitations
Hot black oxide processing at 285°F (141°C) may affect the hardness of heat-treated materials. Not recommended for extremely hard steels above 50 HRC without careful process control and validation.
Post-Treatment Maintenance
Oil-sealed parts require periodic re-oiling to maintain corrosion protection. For dry-to-touch applications, specify wax or lacquer sealing.
Surface Condition
Black oxide does not hide surface defects—scratches, tool marks, and imperfections remain visible through the coating. Polish or finish parts to desired appearance before processing.
