Bead Blasting Finish Service Overview

Bead-blasting part

Bead blasting is a surface finishing process that uses high-pressure compressed air to propel glass beads at metal surfaces, creating a clean, uniform texture. The process removes surface imperfections, machining marks, oxidation, and contaminants while producing a consistent matte or satin appearance.

Fine glass beads impact the metal surface at controlled pressure, removing a thin layer of material and creating an even texture. Bead blasting works with aluminum, stainless steel, titanium, brass, copper, and tool steel. Beyond visual appeal, bead blasted surfaces offer improved paint adhesion, reduced glare, and better resistance to fingerprints and scratches.

Bead Blasting Finish Advantages

Advantages of Bead Blasting

1

Uniform Surface Texture

Creates consistent, repeatable finishes across all parts in a production run. Eliminates variations from machining processes and provides even appearance on complex geometries.

2

Improved Paint & Coating Adhesion

The micro-texture created by bead blasting significantly increases surface area and provides mechanical anchoring for paints, powder coatings, anodizing, and plating processes. Results in longer-lasting, more durable finishes.

3

Hides Minor Imperfections

Effectively conceals small scratches, machining marks, and minor surface defects while maintaining dimensional accuracy. Ideal for improving cosmetic appearance of functional parts.

4

Reduced Glare & Fingerprint Resistance

The matte texture scatters light, eliminating reflective glare. Non-smooth surface shows less visible fingerprints compared to polished or as-machined surfaces—important for consumer-facing products.

5

Stress Relief & Fatigue Resistance

Glass bead peening creates compressive stress in the surface layer, improving fatigue life and resistance to stress corrosion cracking. Beneficial for cyclic load applications.

Important Notes

1

Standard Finish

#120 grit glass bead blasting is our standard offering for most applications. Achieves Ra 1.6-3.2 μm surface finish suitable for general industrial and cosmetic requirements.

2

Media Selection

Different grit sizes (#60-#220) available based on desired finish and material type. Our engineering team can recommend optimal media for your specific application and surface requirements.

3

Geometry Limitations

Deep recesses, blind holes, and complex internal features may limit coverage uniformity. Discuss part geometry during quoting for proper process planning.

4

Masking Requirements

Threaded holes, tight tolerances, and critical dimensions require protective masking. Identify features requiring protection during the quote process to ensure proper handling.

5

Custom Requirements

Contact our engineering team for non-standard specifications or special applications. We develop custom solutions for unique finishing challenges.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Aluminum, stainless steel, titanium, brass, copper, steel, and tool steel. Not suitable for very soft materials (lead, thin foils) or brittle ceramics. Contact us for material-specific questions.

Typical material removal is 0.005-0.02mm. For parts with tolerances ±0.025mm or tighter, we recommend factoring this into your design or masking critical dimensions.

Minimum requirements: material type, part dimensions, quantity, and desired finish. CAD files or technical drawings help us provide more accurate quotes. If you’re missing information, we’ll work with you to gather details during consultation.
